Defeat Hate. Vote.

The Stark County NAACP will host the 88th NAACP Ohio State Convention on September 7 and 8 at the Holiday Inn, Belden Village.
The convention theme Defeat Hate. Vote. speaks to this moment in our history where civil rights we once considered permanent, are under attack like never before. With midterm elections approaching, the recent issues facing the nation of implicit bias, the growing popularity of hate groups, and the continued threats to civil rights will be the topics foremost on the convention’s agenda. The convention is open to all NAACP members and those who are friends of the NAACP to organize, strategize and mobilize to defeat hate.

Among the events taking place that attendees can look forward to include: a keynote address to the General Session by Representative Emilia Strong Sykes (D) – District 34, The Ohio House of Representatives, the Win (Women in the NAACP) breakfast keynote speaker is Thelma T. Daley, National Director for the Women in the NAACP and a past national president of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., Quincy Bates, National Manager for the NAACP Youth and College Division is the GenX/Millennial luncheon speaker; a peek at an exciting collaboration on community and police relationships with the Football Hall of Fame and the Ohio Association of Police Chiefs, a workshop aimed to dispel the stigma of mental illness in the Black community titled What’s on Your Mind? African Americans and Mental Health, and a series on wealth building strategies for people of color.

“This convention will be one of our most dynamic conventions yet. It will feature a robust series of seminars, workshops, and panel discussions, augmented with inspiring keynote addresses from a spectrum of civil rights and political influencers around the state of Ohio,” said Stark County NAACP President, Deb Shamlin. “Convention participants are in for a powerful experience”
